Parvovirus!
« on: March 05, 2010, 08:57:51 PM »
Just an FYI, the parvovirus is spreading around rapidly here in the LC Valley and up on the Palouse. My friend took their dog to the vet, and they said that they have had several dogs die of the virus, and to be sure that your dogs have their shots updated.

Heres a little bit of info on Parvo:

The most common form of the disease is the intestinal form known as enteritis. Parvovirus enteritis is characterized by vomiting (often severe), diarrhea, dehydration, dark or bloody feces, and in severe cases, fever and lowered white blood cell counts. Acute parvovirus enteritis can be seen in dogs of any breed, sex, or age. The disease will progress very rapidly and death can occur as early as two days after the onset of the disease. The presence of gram negative bacteria, parasites, or other viruses can worsen the severity of the disease and slow recovery.

If your dog shows any signs, or has diarrhea, it might not hurt to get him/her checked!  Not sure if it's as much of a problem anywhere else, but like I said, its a big problem here this spring (and its always good to keep them up to date, especially hunting dogs!)
